Female Veterans

Did you know approximately 10% of U.S. Veterans are women? Additionally, women comprise 11.6% of post-OEF/OIF/OND veterans, and more than 20% of active duty military are women. About 280,000 women have served since 9/11, marking a tremendous shift on the battlefield, and bringing a different set of health, social, and economic needs as returning service members and Veterans than was previously needed in a system where most supportive services and programs were geared to men.

Resources for Female Veterans

There are a number of specialized programs and resources developed especially to meet the needs of women veterans. Check out the links below, and then engage with our Veteran Navigators at FWDB for personalized consulting on how to leverage these and other resources available as you transition to civilian employment.

  • Center for Women Veterans – A center established for women veterans and the women still serving. These centers oversee the VA’s administration of physical healthcare, mental healthcare, benefits services, and programs pertaining to women veteran.
  • Advisory Committee on Women Veterans – The committee assesses the needs of women Veterans, with respect to VA programs such as compensation, rehabilitation, outreach, healthcare, etc.  The Committee reviews VA’s programs, activities, research projects and other initiatives designed to meet the needs of women Veterans.
  • Makeovers that Matter – Provides female veterans with a total makeover that prepares them for the interview process and provides them with additional confidence to ace the interview. This program also has free counseling with employment specialists to help write resumes, improve interviewing process, and self-empowerment counseling.
  • Blue Butterfly Village – Renovated and furnished Navy housing used to house predominately female veterans and their children in the San Pedro area. This site also provides support services such as mental health treatment, child care, job training, and on-site security.
  • West Los Angeles VA Women’s Health Clinic – Offers female specific care to female veterans. The clinic also provides mental health services including treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder and other military related traumas.
  • Naomi House – Provides emergency housing, support services and a work development program for a number of female veterans. Support services include financial management, job training, counseling, and health care access. This program is provided by the Salvation Army.
  • Women Veterans Call Center (VA) – The Women Veterans Call Center is staffed by knowledgeable VA employees who provide information about benefits, eligibility and services specifically for women Veterans.  The Call Center staff is trained to answer questions and provide personalized information about claims, education, and health care, as well as information about VA cemeteries and survivors’ benefits.  In addition to linking women Veterans to information, the Women Veterans Call Center makes direct referrals to Women Veteran Program Managers (WVPM) located at every VA Medical Center.  The Women Veteran Program Manager helps the woman Veteran coordinate services. 855.VA.WOMEN
